“Jellyfish in the Blue Sea of Sula Sgeir”

This winning photograph of a jellyfish was taken off the coast of a small uninhabited Scottish isle called Sula Sgeir (meaning “Gannet Skerry” in Gaelic). Although the tiny island is remote and inhospitable for humans, the surrounding waters are rich with diverse marine life.

theblackship:The Lions Mane Jellyfish is the largest jellyfish in the world. They have been swimming in arctic waters since before the dinosaurs (over 650 million years ago) and are among some of the oldest surviving species in the world.
The largest can come in at about 6 meters and has tentacles over 50 meters long. Pretty amazing when you think these things have been swimming around for so long.
They have hundreds of poisonous tentacles that it used to catch passing by fish. it then slowly drags in it’s prey and eats it.

Now that we’ve got 45+ followers, I think it’s time to start the first art contest. My original plan was for the winner to receive a print or t-shirt of their design, but since funds are limited, we may only be able to offer recognition (and possibly the prize in the future). With that in mind, here are the guidelines:
Can be any medium (digital, paint, pencil, etc.)
Must include at least 1 jellyfish image.
Must be submitted by April 6th at midnight.
Also, please let me know if you’re participating, just so I can know how many to expect. Thank you!
